One of the top questions that I get from people planning an Iceland vacation is “How can I see Iceland’s incredible nature without renting a car?”. While Iceland’s Ring Road makes for an incredible road trip, I can understand why someone might not want to brave the roads, especially in winter. Renting a car in Iceland is both an expensive endeavor as well as an intimidating one.
Thankfully, there are a wonderful number of day trips from Reykjavik that show off some of Iceland’s best natural scenery without the hassle of driving or changing hotels.
If you only have a few days in Iceland, Reykjavik is a great base for exploring. I have visited Iceland 8 different times as part of my job as a trip leader & tour guide. I have curated this list of the best day trips from Reykjavik to help you maximize a short trip in Iceland without much hassle. Whether you crave the soothing warmth of hot springs, the thrill of spotting whales under the northern lights, or the surreal sensation of floating between tectonic plates, there’s a Reykjavik day-trip for every mood and every kind of explorer.
10 Unforgettable Day Trips from Reykjavik to Maximize a Short Trip

Overview & Words of Advice
- Many of these tours depart from Reykjavík (or offer pick-up) but glacier hikes, ice caves, and southern-coast adventures can be long days. You might consider doing a 2 or 3 day tour of southern coast of Iceland if you don't want to spend so much time in a bus.
- Most day trip tours do NOT include meals. Typically, the tours will stop at a cafeteria or rest stop to pick up food. This can be expensive with minimal options. I recommend packing yourself a lunch from Reykjavik to bring along with you. If you need recommendations, check out my Reykjavik food & restaurant guide.
- Winter and summer bring different options. Some experiences (like ice caves) may be easier or safer in certain seasons. Always check with your tour operator.
- Weather in Iceland is famously unpredictable. Allow some flexibility in your schedule, especially for Northern Lights hunting, and build in a backup plan (for instance, pairing a lagoon visit with a sightseeing day)

Whale Watching
If you want a marine-life experience with minimal effort, a whale-watching tour is a fantastic day (or half-day) option. Most of these day trips depart from Reykjavik’s old harbour. The cruise will head out into Faxaflói Bay, where you might spot minke whales, humpback whales, dolphins or harbour porpoises.
What’s neat is you don’t have to dedicate a whole day for this. It can fit neatly between Reykjavik mornings and dinners.
Typically the half day tour will last 2.5–3.5 hours, while a full day tour will be 6 to 7 hours. These tours often include warm flotation suits, a safe boat with viewing decks, and the possibility to retry if no whales are spotted.

Northern Lights Hunting
Chasing the Northern Lights is a kind of pilgrimage for many visiting Iceland in winter. Basically, these tours involve driving around at night searching for good aurora views. Sometimes, you find aurora right away. Sometimes, you’re driving around for hours.
I recommend booking a Northern Lights tour early in your trip. That way, if you don’t see the aurora, you have time to book another tour or hunt for them independently.
While nothing is guaranteed, a night-tour departing from Reykjavík gives you one of the best chances to see aurora. Because the aurora depends on both solar activity and clear skies, the tour's success can be unpredictable. If the sky doesn’t cooperate one night, many operators offer a re-try valid for up to three years.

Glacier Hike
There are many glaciers in Iceland, and some of them, such as Falljökull or Vatnajökull, are even accessible from Reykjavik as a day trip. These hikes aren’t light strolls. You’ll don crampons, helmets, and ice-axes, guided by certified glacier experts. But if you’re physically fit and curious about Iceland’s ice world, walking atop ancient glacial ice, through crevasses and across shimmering fields, is a memory that stays with you forever.
Recommended Glacier Day Trips
You can often combine glacier walking with other South-Coast sights or ice caves if you’re willing to commit a full day or more.

Hvammsvik Lagoon
Located in the serene fjord region of Hvalfjörður just 1 hour from Reykjavik, the thermal waters of Hvammsvik Lagoon offer a calming counterpoint to the more famous wellness spots around Reykjavík. It is much less well-known than the Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon, so you’ll have a more relaxing experience. The soothing water, warmed by geothermal energy far underground, is directly on the fjord, so you relax surrounded with jaw-dropping views.

Golden Circle
If there is one day trip from Reykjavik that you’ve heard about already, it is the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle is a 300 km route that offers a density of natural attractions in the southwest corner of Iceland. This classic loop packs history, geology and jaw-dropping landscapes into one big day.
3 most important natural wonders in the Golden Circle:
- Thingvellir National Park
- Gullfoss Waterfall
- Geysir Geothermal area
There are several other notable natural wonders in the Golden Circle, including Kerid Crater Lake, Reykjadalur Hot Spring, and the charming town of Selfoss. For travellers wanting a mix of nature, history and easy logistics, the Golden Circle is hard to beat — especially if you want a “highlight reel” of Iceland without wandering too far from Reykjavík.

Silfra Snorkeling
One of the most surreal and unique day trips you can do from Reykjavik is snorkeling between Earth’s tectonic plates. No really! You can snorkel in Silfra Fissure, part of the tectonic rift in Þingvellir National Park. The water is glacier-cold and unusually clear, but the underwater photos alone make it worth the early start. All the tours of Silfra Fissure include a thick dry suit, snorkel equipment and included photos.

Snæfellsnes Peninsula
For those willing to commit to a longer day, a trip to Snæfellsnes Peninsula feels like a condensed slice of all Iceland’s wonders. Because the peninsula spans a large area, the full-day version tends to be a long day (~12 to 14 hours depending on weather conditions), but it packs so much dramatic scenery that it often ends up being one of the most memorable days in Iceland.
5 most important attractions in Snæfellsnes Peninsula
- Kirkjufell mountain & Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall
- Berserkjahraun lava fields
- Arnarstapi Cliffs
- Ytri Tunga beach
- Snæfellsjökull Glacier
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula, sometimes referred to as "Iceland in Miniature," because in just 1 day, you can see a diverse array of landscapes that encapsulate the essence of Iceland. You’ll admire towering basalt cliffs, rugged coastline, volcanic craters, black-sand beaches, and charming fishing villages.

Blue Lagoon
No list of day trips from Reykjavík is complete without the instantly recognizable Blue Lagoon. Located about 40 minutes from the city, this geothermal spa draws visitors from around the world with its milky-blue water, silica mud masks, steam baths, and that dreamy, otherworldly vibe. I have a separate blog post detailing all the things you need to know about visiting the Blue Lagoon and whether or not I think it is worth it.
If it is your first time in Iceland, then I would probably say yes, the Blue Lagoon is worth visiting. You can save yourself time & hassle by visiting the Blue Lagoon on your way into Reykjavik from the airport. It is actually really close to Keflavik Airport with lots of shuttle bus connections. Because the Blue Lagoon is such a comfortable base, it works as an excellent “reset day” after your long international flight.
Recommended Blue Lagoon Day Trip Tours
- Direct booking with Blue Lagoon including transportation
- Bus Travel Iceland: many different Blue Lagoon packages, including some combined with aurora hunting or Golden Circle

Ice Caves
Going inside an ice cave was one of the most unique experiences I had while traveling in Iceland, and I would 100% recommend it to anyone interested in discovering the magic of glacial ice. It may seem scary, but it is truly incredible to go INSIDE a glacier. Each season, the ice caves fluctuate in position and size as the glacier moves, making each visit a completely different vantage point.
The tour typically includes a helmet, spikes for your shoes, transportation and a knowledgeable guide. You’ll walk on top of the glacier until you reach the entrance to the caves. Depending on how deep the cave is, you may go down just a few steps or quite a way down. Wear warm layers that you don’t mind getting dirty, because there are times when you may need to crawl or hunch to fit inside the caves.

Southern Coast Highlights
Another long but amazing day trip from Reykjavik is the southern coast. Iceland is a country where you can see waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes and active geysers all in one trip. Nowhere are nature’s wonders more clustered than southern Iceland. On this route you’ll typically see majestic waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss, black-sand beaches, powerful Atlantic waves, coastal cliffs, and often glimpses of glaciers on the horizon.
After 8 trips to Iceland, I can honestly say that southern Iceland is my favorite region to explore. You can see a rainbow ringed waterfall followed by a 4,000 year old glacier followed by a black sand beach all in one day in southern Iceland.
Recommended Southern Coast Day Trips
Many tours heading to the south combine not just the beaches and waterfalls, but also optional glacier hikes, ice-cave visits, or glacier-lagoon excursions — if you’re up for a long day (or two).
